US Imposed Sanctions Against Hydra and Garantex

The US Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions against the Hydra darknet marketplace and the Garantex cryptocurrency exchange, through whose accounts ransomware money was laundered.

According to an investigation published by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), about $8 million related to ransomware proceeds, including Ryuk, Sodinokibi and Conti, passed through Hydra’s accounts.

And through Garantex, transactions worth more than $100 million were carried out, which are associated with illegal entities and darknet marketplaces. Of these, almost $6 million came from the Russian hacker group Conti and about $2.6 million from Hydra.

OFAC has blocked all Hydra and Garantex property within US borders, and residents and citizens of the country are now prohibited from working with the platforms.

These actions by the US government are aimed at preventing potential sanctions evasion by Russia through the use of cryptocurrencies.
