The European Union Banned Deposits on Crypto Wallets for Citizens of the Russian Federation and Belarus 

The European Union included in the package of sanctions, adopted against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, an “extended ban” on deposits in cryptocurrency wallets and the sale of banknotes and securities denominated in any currency of EU member states to individuals and legal entities from the Russian Federation and Belarus.

In addition, the European Commission banned large cryptocurrency services from providing services in Russia. Thus, the European Union intends to close possible loopholes for circumventing previously imposed sanctions.

The package of sanctions also included bans: on the purchase, import or transfer of Russian coal from August 2022; entry of Russian ships into the ports of the European Union; on the activities of motor transport enterprises of the Russian Federation and Belarus, including those transporting goods in transit; on the export of fuel for jet engines, quantum computers, advanced semiconductors, high-tech electronics, software, engineering and transport equipment; on the imports of timber, cement, fertilizers, seafood and spirits.

New companies, businessmen, officials and people spreading the “Kremlin narrative about Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine” people, as well as family members of previously sanctioned individuals, were also sanctioned.

The European Union also introduced a complete ban on transactions with four key Russian banks, which account for 23% of the market share in the Russian banking sector.

On February 24, Russia carried out a paramilitary invasion of Ukraine on several fronts, shelling Kharkiv, Kyiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Vinnytsia and other cities of various calibres.
