Imprisoned John McAfee Claims His Crypto Fortune is Gone

McAfee antivirus creator John McAfee, who has been serving his sentence in a Spanish prison for tax evasion since 2020, said on Twitter that his entire cryptocurrency fortune had disappeared.

McAfee, 76, tweeted: “I have nothing. But I don’t regret anything,” and noted that:

“The US believes I have hidden crypto. I wish I did, but it has dissolved through the many hands of Team McAfee (your belief is not required), and my remaining assets are all seized. My friends evaporated because they didn’t want to associate with me”.

The US government is currently seeking McAfee’s extradition. And the Spanish court is going to rule on this in the next few days.

There are a number of charges against McAfee, including the alleged operation of two crypto scammers who defrauded investors for $ 13 million.

If extradited to the United States, McAfee will have to stand trial on tax evasion charges between 2014 and 2018. The charges stem from the tax evasion on cryptocurrency profits, paid crypto promotions, consulting work, and the sale of rights to a documentary about his life.

McAfee faces a minimum of five years for each count of the tax evasion and a minimum of one year for each count of wilful refusal to file a tax return, according to an indictment from the Tennessee Department of Justice and Attorney’s Office in June 2020.

Given his age, the entrepreneur, if found guilty, will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
