Humanity May Develop AGI By 2029 — Elon Musk

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, suggested that by 2029 humanity can develop artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Rebooting AI author and vocal general AI critic Gary Markus, in an open letter, offered Elon Musk a $100,000 bet on whether AGI would be available by 2029. And he added that the businessman’s comment is useless in the broader discussions about AI.

“Musk’s statements about AGI only increase the hype around modern technology. And we actually probably need to take a step back to understand where we are and really face the tough challenges,” Markus said.

In his opinion, at present too much money is being invested “not where it’s necessary.” And the tendency to look at AGI as “something magical” has misled corporate businesses and politicians.

Elon Musk did not answer the call. And Marcus pointed out that there needs to be a public debate on the issue, whether or not money is at stake.
