Chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen Received the NFT Trophy for Winning the Tournament
For the first time in chess history, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen was awarded the NFT Trophy for winning the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour (MCCT).
Several NFT trophies and collectibles were minted specifically for the tournament to preserve the most important moments of the game indefinitely.
Speaking to Cointelegraph, Carlsen stated that NFTs help the chess community celebrate great moments and perhaps also reward those who have already spent so much time developing the game.
Chess Champs minted two identical Champion’s Trophy NFT issues on the Ethereum blockchain, which were digitally signed by Carlsen after winning the tournament. The second NFT trophy was auctioned for 6.88 Ether (ETH), which is around $24,700 at the time of purchase. After the deadline, the NFT trophy surged to 11 Ethers ($27,093), the source said.
Collectables also include NFTs dedicated to various chess pieces (such as pawn and bishop) on the blockchain.
